Meet Alejandra
Who inspires you?
I don't really get inspired by many artists, but rather people I interact with daily. Anyone who is bold enough to follow and fight for their dreams gives me a pinprick of strength to follow my own, and most importantly, find my own.
Something you do where time flies.
Time flies whenever music is involved in some way. Either when I sit to play a made-up song on the piano, or sitting in my bed with guitar, or even when listening to music while doing homework. I only become aware of the passing time once the song is over; and 3 or 4 minutes just passed by.
If you had 1 question for a genie, what would it be?
Is it ever possible to reach true happiness?
What brings the best in you?
If the answer for this question is supposed to be people, then that would be those who accept me for who I am; those for whom I don't need to change the way I speak or think. However, if the answer should be something more abstract, then it would be music; theres nothing that makes me think and relax more than spending a couple of hours in the piano.
If a drummer plays the snare in a forest and nobody is there to listen to it does it make a sound?
Duh of course it does; the fact that only the person making the music hears is does not mean that it will not make a sound.
What’s an ideal day for you?
A perfect day for me would pretty much involve sleep, music, friends and family, a book, my favorite movies and series, a guitar and a piano and food, don't forget the food. It may sound stereotypical and simple; but simple is fine for me, as long as I let myself be happy and take a break from my daily routine.

Why music?
I can't remember when music became part of my life, but I can say what it means to me currently. I am a person who tends not to be understood by others, who has emotions that I dont always show and I need to use somehow; this is where music comes in. Its a way of expressing myself when I can't do it through words. And its also a way of escaping reality when I need a break.
What are your songs about? (What specific themes do they cover?)
As for now, I haven't written many songs, but the last experience I had in composing music was for my Personal Project, in where I had to convey the emotions of a certain book through music, and it was certainly a challenge. My songs covered the theme of death, love, regret, anger, and stereotypes.
What image do you think your music conveys?
I would say something relaxing and ‘chill’ as people call it these days. But most importantly, I would say that the lyrics of my music conveys a story and a message, something that needs to be listened to carefully to understand.
Where have you performed? Do you have any upcoming shows planned?
In the past two years, I have been open to new opportunities of performing, and the school provides many platforms of performance. I have performed in Tri-M night, Techo Talent Show, Peru Fest, the full band/choir/jazz band final concert, and the Personal Project exhibition.
What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Learning that not all songs can be played the way I envisioned it. With so many people involved, patience and open-mindedness are one of the most prominent attributes you should have to get to a successful performance. Personally, after performing with the same people so many times, I can say that we have overcome that challenge and understand each other musically, making things much easier.
Describe a moment where music changed you.
Everyone has their own problems and battles that they are fighting, including me. These past months, whenever something was wrong, it would change my mood and affect those who care about me, that was until my brother told me “go use those emotions to play piano.” It seemed like a stupid idea then, but when I sat there for an hour and transferred all those emotions into music I composed, that was a moment of realization for me.
What are currently your main artistic challenges?
Begin composing, seek for my own musical “voice”, meaning something that people associate with me.
What inspires you?
Anything I can experience or see by myself. If someone shows me a video of a group of students doing community and service, I will be touched; but if I spend a saturday morning at Hospital Rebagliati interacting with children, then those are the experiences that inspire me,
What do you want people to know about your music?
Listening to many genres of music doesn't mean you have a strange taste, it just means that you are more open to hearing everything music has to offer.
What is the your objective by the end of the school year?
I am currently learning to play the bass for a Band class at school; I want to improve as much as possible, and learn as much as I can of how many ways can a bass add flair to any song, to then implement it.
